Review of No Impact Man: Documentary Movie

Review of No Impact Man: Documentary Movie -

About the movie - "Colin Beavan is a liberal schlub who got tired of listening to himself complain about the world without ever actually doing anything about it" Thus, in November, 2006, Beavan launched a year-long project in which he, his wife, his two-year-old daughter and his four-year-old dog went off the grid and attempted to live in the middle of New York City with as little environmental impact as possible. The No Impact project has been the subject of stories in the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, and many other national and international news outlets. --- A family embarks on a year-long project to reduce their net footprint by using no electricity, producing no trash and giving back to the world. No Impact Man presents the severe lifestyle changes that come with altering their entire existence.

My review

I thought this movie was a fascinating experiment which not only shows the impact that we as a culture make on our world, but also on Colin and his family. In the beginning, you could just see how this change was tearing he and his wife Michelle up. But the fact that they stuck it out... more that she stuck through it with him, was such a inspiration for me.

Perhaps their young daughter Isabella was the biggest inspiration because it showed how she was easily able, (as far as I could see) to happily live with no impact. Sure, she was so young and probably didn't even realize what she was doing without. Nonetheless, isn't that part of the point of this film? Making our life so natural through natural living.

My sincere appreciation goes to Colin and his family for creating this document of their lives and allowing us to peek into it. No Impact Man had the opposite effect on this viewer. I was very impacted.

Calling all Vegetarians, Vegans and Nutrition Minded Folks from Carroll, Grayson, Patrick

Calling all Vegetarians, Vegans and Healthy Nutrition Minded Folk from Carroll, Grayson, Patrick Counties, VA, Surry County NC and surrounding areas.

Hello Everyone from Floyd, VA to Mount Airy NC and all points in-between. I'm considering starting a group similar to those you find on meetup, for those of us in the area who would like to meet once a month or so, to talk about our nutrition, health and share our struggles, with a emphasis on a vegan, vegetarian, or near vegetarian lifestyle. Would anyone be interested in A. Joining an online group (free to all) and or B. Getting together every month or two, probably near Hillsville, Galax, Mt Airy, Floyd... bringing a veggie or vegan dish to share and discussing how we can improve our health and support one another? There are already groups like this in Blacksburg, Roanoke and Winston but I'd love to start one in our own backyard.

If interested, please contact me via email from my home site RadioWaves.US or the blog / social network where you saw this message!

Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman, division and the change it can bring

In 1992, I had just bought my first new car. It was a candy apple red Nissan Sentra. I was so proud of it. I drove to my best friends house to show him. Vance looked at the car and smiled. "I could never drive a red car." Thinking he was going to make fun of it, I barked, "Why? What's wrong with it?" His smile got a little bigger. He paused for a moment and said "Man, I'd be stopped 5 times a day if I owned that car." I had no clue what he meant. "Why would you get stopped? What are you, a robber?" I joked. We laughed. His tone became a bit more serious. "Mike, I'm Black."

We were standing in his yard on Winter's Lane in Baltimore, now recognized as the Winter's Lane Historic District, which houses the oldest remaining African American Church in Catonsville, established in 1868. I knew he was black. I knew there was still racism. But surely he wouldn't be pulled over for driving a red car. At that time I had never even known the words 'racial profiling'. "My brother drove a red car. He was stopped all the time." Vance said. "The cops stopped your brother all the time because he's a black guy and he drove a red car?" There was a divide of understanding between us. I just couldn't believe that this would happen. Not in the 1990's. And Vance didn't understand that I couldn't believe it.

I lived a few miles away in Halethorpe where the sun shined and birds went tweet tweet tweet. Sure, we had our share of long haired white guys on drugs but it was a fairly peaceful neighborhood. Vance lived in a small home that looked out on Baltimore National Pike. The house was cramped and Vance didn't even have a private bedroom. But I was always welcomed by his family and his mother never failed to say hello and spend a few minutes talking with me. She even gave me a wedding gift and a bestowed a blessing on me before getting married in 1989. I'm sure she knew that anyone who was going to marry me needed all the help they could get.

It seemed I was with Vance quite often. Laughing, carrying on, talking about whatever. Race didn't usually come up. But there was division and a lack of knowledge, mostly on my part. A few months before his mother passed on, we were talking about her high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which were dangerously out of control. Vance explained that this was common among African Americans due mostly to diet. I just sat there, again befuddled.

I knew nothing about black people except what I saw and what I had been taught. But I always had tried to look at everyone as an individual, rather than, as a race. I didn't always succeed.

I am at once amazed and disgusted by the history of the United States. Slavery, freedom, attempted genocide, a beacon of light to the world, puritanical denial of our faults, all mixed together in a cauldron of confusion. Many of us cannot see the forest for the trees. We do as so many have done for thousands of years. We treat ourselves as superior and our life as fans of a sports team. We (I'm saying we, but of course I mean simply the "stereotypical" we) hear about a young man such as Trayvon Martin, who was killed and we immediately react. The walls go up. The lines are drawn. There are no witnesses but we all seem to know the facts. We all know the story. And the two minute sound bytes on the news strengthen our resolve. One side defends itself. 'Trayvon was trying to hurt that poor man.' And the other side shouts 'Zimmerman is a racist and a killer.' And look at that. There are black and white and all of the other human colors on both sides of the issue. Why? There are various reasons. But a few are brave enough to say "no one knows what happened except for Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman." and refuse to lay blame. What all of us do know for sure is that a mother has lost her son. Just like Vance lost his mother and a few months later, I lost Vance. And the world has lost another child.

And Mr. Zimmerman? How free will he ever be? A tired, exhausted jury, which I would not have wanted to be a part, found him not guilty. So although there are not bars holding him prisoner, will his own conscience be his jailer? Will our opinions keep him incarcerated? His guilt? Or perhaps just the fact that a child lay dead at his hands will be enough to make him a convict to his own mind.

The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King said "Hate cannot drive out hate, only Love can do that." Yes, another life has left us. But many of us know that his Light is forever and that his Energy will be spread to create positive change. Let us Be the change we want to see. Let us be really, truly Loving, in the face of that which we cannot understand. Let us realize now, in this moment, as we grieve for Trayvon, that we are One. Let us end this division. Let us come together and repeat the words of Benjamin Crump, (the Martin Family Lawyer) "In order for Trayvon to rest in peace, we must All be Peaceful." Let us hold hands, cry, hug, laugh, understand and let go of our judgmental shackles. And then we will release ourselves from our own prisons, to be free. To Be Free.

Our decisions and the ripples that can turn into tidle waves

I usually stay quiet these days when it comes to controversy. My opinions are just that, my opinions. I believe that this quote from Neale Donald Walsch would be valuable for anyone who has an opinion on what another person says, believes and does. "No one does anything inappropriate, given their model of the world." This may be the truest statement I've ever heard.

Yes, sometimes we realize we are doing something "wrong". In actuality, we are just making a new decision in our lives. This statement can be difficult to accept, especially if we're on the outside and someone has "wronged" us. But it is as it is. And we must decide whether or not to forgive and go on or to show favoritism to our feelings.

I am wrestling with this over the Paula Deen issue. I don't watch her show so I don't really care that she was let go and that her sponsors are scattering. But there are many more variables here than we imagine. Are Food Network and commercial interests just doing what will protect it or are they truly disgusted by Paula's attitude toward language that is not now, or ever, acceptable? Can they accept her apology and still stand by their decision? And what of Paula herself? Is she really sorry? Or is she afraid that her career is dead and her name will be poison? These are all valid questions and we cannot know the answers. We can only make "our" decision based on the evidence that we see.

I accept Paula Deen's apology. I don't take it any further than that. I accept it and I let go. I'd break bread with her and I wouldn't cast stones. But if I owned a network, I would also remove her from it.. I don't care if millions of young black men are using that word continuously. That doesn't make it acceptable. It is not an excuse to use the word. Personally, I believe it is the most volatile and offensive word in history. I would remove Paula as my way to say, "this is not acceptable and this is a way to show that." And I would just as freely show up with her in public for dinner and laugh and hug her. Seventy Time Seven my friends.

I used to say that I didn't believe the statement; "No man is an island." but I believe "every man (human) is an island." I now believe both statements are true. Each of us is an individual part of the whole. Like how all of the tiny cells make up our body. We need to nurture each cell as part of us. Individuals are part of the All. When we are sick, or find something cancerous in our bodies, we care for it so that we can make ourselves better. But we do not allow the cancer to spread. We are tender and at the same time firm. If we become angry about our sickness, it will create more sickness as the body is out of alignment with itself. If we create joy and happiness while seeing the sickness, we heal. Let us make a new decision with our thoughts and we will heal ourselves... and the world.

that this method of communication is still very much an integral part of life. A human voice stands out and punctuates what it promotes extremely well, while providing information that can be received in
situations where visuals are not an option (you simply cannot read about offering a product while driving safely).”

Miller adds, “catch-phrases and slogans have played a large roll in the success of just about every business in all facets of industry.

Help Raise money to help adapt a house for Millie's electric wheelchair.

I always look for worthy causes to donate a little money to here and there. Give Something - Get Something More. Well, this cause found me. I am hoping to help Millie and her sister raise money to adapt their home for her electric wheelchair. You can donate $5 and get a joke. Or donate more, just to help out. If you select "order more than one" and choose 4, you will donate $20. Add all of the gig extras and donate another $30 for a total of $50. Note: Fiver takes 20% off the top so they will get $40 if you donate $50. This is a great way to give! Send your Positive Energy and Your Love!

Welcome to Benny and Millie's joke shop! We are raising money to help adapt our house for Millie's electric wheelchair. We think we need to sell about 10,000 jokes to raise enough money to do this!

The Real "Old Dusseldorf in A Long Neck"  Fictional Beer made in Maryland is really MBC, The Maui Brewing Company. Or is it? I waste my time investigating. and come up with this cool article from someone who did the same.

A few more hints

Someone says that there is an Old Dusseldorf  brewed in Manhattan Kansas. However, I don't find it on their site.

Like Leaves

This day has had a very odd feel for me. I walked about 9 or 10 miles this morning. Just walking in circles really. Towards the parkway. Hope the biker found the motorcycle shop in Laurel Fork. I didn't even know we had one. Sweet Bike Though. New projects didn't come in till late. A wonderful surprise of beautiful flowers and a balloon from my big sis. Cool and fun stuff happening on a new project Chris and I are working on. Crazy weather. And the news about Desia. I didn't know her very well. We spoke a few times when I worked at walmart and afterwards too. You couldn't really live in the area and go to Galax without knowing or at least seeing Desia. My heart sunk when mom told me and I couldn't say anything.
The roller coaster ride of this day reminds me that we are here, experiencing every emotion. And yes there are so many that rip our hearts out. But if we will understand that, no matter what we believe, we are energy, that very same energy that makes up the entire Universe, and we cannot be destroyed, we can be comforted. Cover yourself in the warm blanket of your faith, or in your knowledge. Your family or your own Spirit. We have one another, for how ever long we are here. And once someone has moved on physically, we still have them with us. They are inside of us. Grieve. Bring your sorrows close to you. Acknowledge them and let them go. Like leaves, we grow, bring life, and shade, fall to the ground and then are born once again. Rejoice in the never ending cycle that is life.

Some of my "very laid back" voice over work for Big Cat Rescue & some words

Some of my friends were curious to hear the projects I've done for Big Cat Rescue. I'm super happy to share it with everyone. But not only is BCR an amazing place with a beautiful mission, they have a pure heart. They have written this about me and what I do.

Professional Voice Talent by:

Michael Miller has created all of the audio files for the big cat bios on this page and for our Vox guided tour system.  He has been a true joy to work with and has a passion for protecting cats.  If you need any kind of voice work, we highly recommend Michael, not only for his talent, but because of his integrity and his inspiring sense of gratitude.

What does one say about something so kind? Words are not enough to express my joy.

Please check out Big Cat Rescue. See what they do for the Big Cats and really for wildlife in general. Support them with a donation if you are able. Visit the Sanctuary in Tampa and spread the word about this incredible organization that I have been blessed to be a part of!

With that, please enjoy the dulcet tones of Harry Connick... Okay, it's just me.

Sometimes I feel a lot like Christopher McCandless (Alexander Supertramp)

I watched a movie yesterday that I said I'd never watch again. (watch out for the law of attraction) It compelled me to write my story "Anchor" this morning.  The movie is called Into the Wild. Such a sad movie and yet so full of hope. Sometimes I feel a lot like Christopher (Alexander Supertramp) in this movie and I think if I had known I had the choice... in other words, if I knew then what I know now, I might have done exactly what he did. Burn all of my money and I.D.s, and walk out on society and into the wild. If you can deal with the feel of the movie and it interests you, watch it. If not, perhaps do what I'm going to do next; read the book. " I knew all the rules but the rules did not know me. "

"In a compelling book that evokes the writings of Thoreau, Muir, and Jack London, Krakauer recounts the haunting and tragic mystery of 22-year-old Chris McCandless who disappeared in April 1992 into the Alaskan wilderness in search of a raw, transcendent experience." - (Source Review)

Guaranteed - Eddie Vedder
On bended knee is no way to be free
Lifting up an empty cup, I ask silently
All my destinations will accept the one that's me
So I can breathe...
Circles they grow and they swallow people whole
Half their lives they say goodnight to wives they'll never know
A mind full of questions, and a teacher in my soul
And so it goes...
Don't come closer or I'll have to go
Holding me like gravity are places that pull
If ever there was someone to keep me at home
It would be you...
Everyone I come across, in cages they bought
They think of me and my wandering, but I'm never what they thought
I've got my indignation, but I'm pure in all my thoughts
I'm alive...
Wind in my hair, I feel part of everywhere
Underneath my being is a road that disappeared
Late at night I hear the trees, they're singing with the dead
Leave it to me as I find a way to be
Consider me a satellite, forever orbiting
I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me

Love is an Anchor That sets you to sail

I am realizing that, for most of my life, I have been unanchored. Sure, every once in awhile, someone or some thing, anchors me. But for the most part I drift through this life, tossing myself here and there, with no set destination.

I wonder how many others feel this way. And what, if anything anchors you. Usually what winds up anchoring me is a sense of responsibility. A knowing that I must, or should care for some one, and until the responsibility is at its end, I will continue to be anchored to whatever it is that keeps me hovering over that important mission.

There is one other factor that anchors me. Love. I've felt this a few times in this life. Love will spin my compass out of control. It's not that I ever really know where I'm going in the first place, but Love will question any supposed direction. Not so long ago, I was ready to pack up and move to Belize or back to Hawaii. Some tropical destination. No plan. No money. I'd just do it for the adventure. And Love came, like a hurricane. I was hit hard. My intention was twirled around. And you know what? I didn't care. I was changing course and I didn't even know it. Until Love threw me up on shore and left me, like a fiery red sun setting and turning my world dark. It was then, in the quiet and the blackness that I knew, without a doubt, that I was heavily anchored. Anchored to Love and it wasn't even there. Anchored, but not knowing where I was, or where I was going, or if I would even go anywhere ever again.

But I awoke to a splendorous Light. And she burst forth from every direction, even from within me. And in that moment, I knew the incredible truth. Love is an Anchor. But it sets you to sail. She will come around again. She must. Because Love itself, is within you, always.

We can be anchored and still sail. Our raft is our home. And our home is everywhere.

For you. You have forever changed my life and my direction.

I'm so happy to be the voice for Big Cat Rescue!

More than any project I've done in the past 6 months, Big Cat Rescue is the one I'm proudest of. Not because of my laid back, almost NPR, story time delivery. Because this organization is the definition of Love for animals. Particularly the Lions, Tigers, Cougars, Servals, Sand Cats... all the Big Cats.

They not only Love what they do. They ARE what they do. I've rarely seen an organization so 100% full throttle with their mission. It is breath taking. A friend of mine visited BCR a few years ago and seems to be in agreement with this statement.

Thank you Big Cat Rescue! Thank you for caring. Thank you for educating. Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your mission. I am truly honored!

A Dream about the Dalai Lama, Bob, Pizza Slices Prices, Forward Women and Bad Drivers

I had a wild dream this morning about meeting the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off ... Wait! Wrong story.
Anyway, I am talking with him on the phone and as dreams go, he winds up in front of me on the couch. He says that my problem is I never follow through. I give up too easily. I agree that has always been my issue. Now we're sitting at the dinner table when another Monk begins to chant. Some friends of mine, who are all Christians, are sitting at the other table and the owner of the house gets angry and offended by the chanting and says "Alright Bob, that's it for you!" And the Monk is escorted out. About that time, The Dalai Lama gets a huge smile on his face and begins chanting too. He does not wait to be escorted out, but just gets up to leave. I put my arm around his shoulder and walk him to the car. We hug and say our goodbyes and people comment that I have done things for the first time that no one dared. I guess they meant hugging and just being a normal person with the Lama.
I head back to the house. A woman on the front porch makes an advance to me so I ask her to wait. I find my former girlfriend to ask if we're still dating. She says, "Not while pizza is still $39 a slice." I walk away, more confused than ever.
Next thing I know, I'm in the car with my father and he's driving strangely. Says it's okay because he has a permit from someone but he's still on the lookout for police while he turns around on a freeway entrance. - End dream. NO! I did not have spicy food yesterday.

I Love Big Cat Rescue and...

After relaying my joy about voicing the walking tour for Big Cat Rescue - Tampa FL, my friend JoBeth said; "I visited and did a tour in 2008. A very nice tour, nice people, and the cats are gorgeous! They provide much more of a natural environment than most of those cats have ever seen."

I believe that thousands feel this way about the sanctuary and I urge you to support and visit Big Cat Rescue if you can - Michael Miller. Owner

Fasting - 61 hours later

Well, about 61 hours later. Just a slight headache from my fast. Hungry in the afternoon and evenings but morning is fine. The worst part is probably feeling weak like I want to sleep... and stupid commercials for pizza on TV. lol  ... I could murder a vegan pizza right now. (ala Onslow)

Pretty sure I'll make it until tomorrow morning. 3 1/2 days. Can't really go much longer because it's worrying my mom. I know she's just concerned.

I very much recommend fasting for anyone who wants to cleanse their system and receive a lot of clarity, particularly when you're facing a dilemma. If you work, like most of us, make sure to do it on a weekend or when you have two days off. And give someone else the keys if you must go somewhere.

Have an excellent day all.

The good earth is rich and can provide for everyone

I should like to help everyone if possible; Jew, Gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another.

In this world there is room for everyone, and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The Resurrection and the Eternal Light

When we have discovered the joys of speaking only in positives rather than dwelling and speaking on negatives and sorrows, we unlock the secret to the Universe. When we observe all that is around us rather than reacting to all, we can breathe in Peace and breathe out Love. When we know that Everything is for us and nothing is against us, we have become Enlightened to the Infinite Love. This is Truly our Souls Resurrection. - Michael Miller

Light still shines through

I never claimed to be anywhere near perfect. Ask ANY of the women I've been in a relationship with. But I still wake up every morning choosing to be a better individual than I was the day before. Sometimes I am. Other times I fall short. I pray some of the Light still shines through in any event - Michael Miller

sometimes -

sometimes -

by Michael Miller

sometimes I'm not so confident, or positive, patient, or loving, or kind. sometimes I wonder why, when I do all the right things, why things change to create more difficulties. I believe, with all of my being and yet still, these terrible things still happen around me. I know I will wake up in a day or two and see it differently, but I just want you to know that even for me, things are sometimes so very hard. sometimes.

Love always Perseveres. Even lost Love

I'm not out to convince anyone of anything anymore. I've lost so many wonderful friends and relationships because it was supposed one, or the both of us, were absolutely right and had all of the answers. There is only one answer. Love. And Love doesn't assume that it is right. True Love does not care. - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking...  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. My sincere apologies to all of those I have lost. I am joyful that we will find one another again, through Love! - Michael

A Rare 80's Music find from the self titled Ph.D album - Radio to On

I was looking into music from the 80's when I came across an excellent album I bought in 1982 - Ph.D - It was their self titled debut. MTV played two of the songs from the album "I won't let you down" and "Little Susie's on the up" (re-released later by Tesla). Both are very cool songs The album was remastered and reissued in 2009 by voiceprint records but has disappeared again. I found this very rare find on youtube and wanted to share. I really hope the album becomes available widely once again. It is a wonderful 80's memory! Thanks to Anikitos GAROFALAKIS for adding this gem called Radio To On

There is Infinite Love Here

I am made of energy. I will always exist. Whatever happens in this life is a vehicle to move me along, not a beginning or an end. No matter what the ego tells me, no matter what the body feels, those are merely experiences that I need to feel to achieve what I came here to do, be & experience. On some level, I already know everything that needs to be known. I don't remember it all right now because it would prevent me from the experience of the here & now. When I seek my truth, it will come back to me. There is nothing to fear. There is infinite Love here. All that is glows divinely from within me.
